Greene Township – Franklin County

Eagle Rock Project

Eagle Rock ProjectAt the regular meeting of the Greene Township Board of Supervisors held on Tuesday July 22, 2014, the Board reviewed a presentation by Mr. Kyle Shenk of The Conservation Fund, Pennsylvania Office.  The presentation and request for support was related to the purchase and acquisition of a 1,100 acre property in Greene Township known as the Eagle Rock Project. This property once owned by Glatfelter Pulpwood Company and most recently by a timber investment/development company in Atlanta, GA is located along the western edge of South Mountain near White Church Road, Henry Road, Heisey Road and Stillhouse Hollow Road and adjoins the Michaux State Forest. The Conservation Fund is proposing to purchase the land and then transfer to DCNR (Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) to be included as an extension of the Michaux State Forest.  The property is also adjacent to Guilford Water Authority property and in close proximity to multiple agriculture properties which have been previously enrolled in the Franklin County Agriculture Preservation and Conservation Easement program. The total project is approximately 4 million dollars with 3 million from various state and federal entities, agencies and grants and 1 million dollars funding for completion of the project. Mr. Shenk stated that $750,000 has already been pledged with the remaining $250,000 requested from Greene Township. After review and discussion of the project, the Board unanimously voted to approve the funding request of the $250,000, payable over the next three years out of the Townships’ Farmland/Open Space Preservation budget line item. “Rarely does an opportunity come along such as this, to be able to preserve open space and protect watershed resources for generations to come while at the same time opening a large parcel of forested ground to residents and visitors of Greene Township for recreation opportunities is truly unique, this worthy project has multiple benefits.” noted Supervisor Travis Brookens.
